BACKGROUND

In the last decade many governments have introduced elements of Private Public Partnership into their policies in areas of health, education, social services, and development.  However, many questions about Public Private Partnerships have also been raised.

Private Public Partnership provides opportunities for public authorities to engage private providers to finance projects. In return private partners are able to develop their own infrastructure and or generate a financial return from their investment over a period of time.

The private sector can play a crucial role in helping nations afflicted by killer diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. More than six million people die annually from these diseases in Africa.

To reinforce and develop Private Public Partnership in Côte d'Ivoire, a national workshop will be held at the Culture’s Palace of Treichville in Abidjan.

PARTNERSHIPS

The workshop will be held under the patronage of the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, and the Ministry for HIV AIDS. It is organized by the Ivorian National Business Coalition on HIV AIDS in partnership with Times Publications, London.

It is the first part of the Corporate Africa Partnerships for Prevention and Care Africa Health Conference, which will conclude with a two day conference in September 2010. The workshop begins with an opening ceremony, and will include plenary and technical sessions; presentations, and work in committees.

The national workshop will endeavour to create an exchange of ideas and conversations between the health authorities, professionals, and the private sector related to building Private Public Partnerships in the country’s national health and Medicare infrastructure.

AIMS OF NATIONAL WORKSHOP

Main Objective

  • To give a better understanding of the concept of Private Public Partnerships in Ivorian healthcare.

Specific Objectives

  • To highlight the experiences of Private Public Partnerships in the improvement of healthcare services, particularly in the fight against HIVAIDS, tuberculosis and malaria
  • To help in the formulation of a national policy for the development of Private Public Partnerships in healthcare, especially in areas involving the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria
  • To demonstrate how Private Public Partnerships are working in Côte d'Ivoire in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, through a multi-sector based approach.
  • To make recommendations and devise content for the organization of the 4th International Corporate Africa Partnerships for Prevention and Care Africa Health Conference, due to take place at the Ivoire Hotel, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, September 2010.

After the workshop is completed the Organizers would like to see tangible proposals that could realise win-win partnerships between Ivorian health and Medicare and private investors’ interests.
